It's 100 degrees in Iraq and 100 degrees in a tanning bed in Lincoln. This week, the two have something in common.

It's called "Tan for the Troops." This is Max Tan's third year for the program. Wearing camouflage shirts, the workers at Max Tan accept care package donations for overseas troops in exchange for free tanning.

"We always try to do two philanthropies a year," said Laura Ryan, company manager. "One of our manager's cousins was in Iraq at the time, so we contacted the Army to see what could be donated."

Ryan said Max Tan tries to get the care packages to Nebraskans in the war zone. Among things included in the packages are toiletry items, hand sanitizer, deodorant, hard candy, movies, games and paper supplies, such as envelopes and pens.

Ryan said the troops are always grateful.

"We get thank-you notes and pictures from them," Ryan said. "I think it's just a complete surprise to them that a tanning salon would do this."

Ryan said many people come by with boxes of donations, and Max Tan has become a makeshift drop site for the care items.

"An older gentleman came by last year with a big box of donations for the troops," Ryan said. "Of course, he wasn't looking to tan."

The philanthropic tanning salon has also done "Tan for a Can" and "Bronzing for Books." "Tan for the Troops" started Oct. 12 and will continue through Oct. 18. Seventy people have brought in donations so far.

"We will continue do this program every year as long as there are troops overseas," Ryan said.

"Thanks Laura, I'll bring in a donation tomorrow," a customer said as she left.
