Despite building a 29-0 record and ranking third in the country, the Nebraska women's basketball team will fall almost $1 million short of matching its expenses for the 2009-2010 season.
The women's program is on pace to generate almost $1 million this season, nearly twice as much as the $530,000 the athletic department projected, said Marc Boehm, executive associate athletic director at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. But he said that still won't be enough to cover the team's $2 million tab.

Tough economic times are putting a dent in study abroad programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After several years of growth, the number of UNL students cracking the books overseas slipped 6.5 percent last year. Officials worry that the growth may have hit a plateau.
"People are holding onto their money a little more closely, and spending [it] on other things," said Jason Messerli, the student coordinator for the Nebraska at Oxford program.
Only forty-four students are registered this year for the Nebraska at Oxford program, typically one of the most popular offered by UNL. Most years, Nebraska sends 70 students to Jesus College at Oxford to study Britain's political economy and Shakespearean literature. It is suffering because it is considered one of UNL's costlier foreign options at $5,000 plus airfare and tuition.
"It is a large chunk of change," Messerli said, "but you do get a lot for your money."

Danelle Smith, a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, dreamed of being a lawyer as a 12-year-old. Photo: Clay Lomneth, NewsNetNebraska
You're in a hotel, in a conference room. It's full of lawyers, and it's time to schmooze.
Schmooze about Ferguson making partner and problems with the Jaguar and god this coffee and low-grade amphetamines and LOL those were the days and oh, hey, let me give you my card. This is my card. Take my card, a crunching handshake. Another card, another crunching handshake.
Danelle Smith, 37, a single Winnebago mother of three, is a lawyer, too. But she's hanging back, staying closer to the coat rack.
People probably say I'm stuck up, she tells you later. I guess I wish I were more outgoing.
But as the glad-handing continues, there's something refreshing about the lanky woman with the sleek chestnut bob, little makeup and the slightest lilt, something about the way she gingerly passes out her business card only after you ask for one. As if it were the last business card in the world.
And you remember how tightly she clutched the aubergine purse on her shoulder, as if she might bolt, or fly, and didn't want to lose her keys in the process.

The Night Before lounge, 1035 M St., is surrounded by businesses and Saint Paul's United Methodist Church, the red brick building in the background. Photo: Ryan Boetel, NewsNetNebraska
When the Rev. Stephen Griffith peers out his office window at Saint Paul's United Methodist Church, he sees flashing neon legs on a sign that advertises the strip club across the street.
He says the running joke among Saint Paul's ministers is this: The bar across the street is the Night Before; the church is the morning after.
A state senator wants to restrict where adult businesses can locate to avoid the conflicting mix of sacraments and skin like the one that occurs in Lincoln at the intersection of 11th and M streets, where the Night Before lounge and the church coexist.
