The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, announced that he had opened an official investigation into Joe Biden with the aim of starting impeachment proceedings. The accusation relates to the president’s alleged complicity in the foreign affairs of his son, Hunter.
McCarthy said the president lied to the American people about his family’s foreign affairs. He said that the parliamentary investigations conducted so far have provided sufficient evidence to open an official investigation into accountability.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed that the presidency cannot be put up for sale, and pointed to possible crimes such as abuse of power, obstruction of justice and corruption.
It takes at least 218 votes to start the investigation, but it appears that McCarthy does not currently have the necessary support because some members of his party are skeptical. McCarthy cannot afford to lose more than five votes.
