Google has announced a series of updates to its Earth and Maps platforms, which promise to provide users with a more engaging and information-rich experience. These new features include rendering Historical images in Google EarthThe significant expansion of Street View coverage, and the use of artificial intelligence to improve the quality of satellite images. Adding historical imagery to Google Earth allows users to travel through time and see how the landscape has transformed over the decades.
This feature provides a unique perspective on the impact of human activity and climate change, visually showing the evolution of forests, cities and natural features. Historical images cover a wide range of time periods, with some sites offering glimpses back as far as 80 years. Major cities such as Milan, Rome, London, Paris and Berlin are among the areas where users can access old photos by activating the “Time Lapse” function in the options, with some photos dating back to the 1930s.
The new feature is available on both web and mobile versions of Google Earth. Google is also expanding its Street View offering with a major update that brings new imagery to nearly 80 countries, including some receiving coverage for the first time, such as Bosnia, Namibia, Liechtenstein, and Paraguay. There is also an increase in coverage for Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Japan, New Zealand and Rwanda. AI cannot be missing: Using a new AI model called Cloud Score Plus, Google is improving the clarity of satellite images, removing visual obstructions such as clouds, fog and haze.
