Italy missing Venezuela for days, ‘worried’ – News

Date:

The number of disappearances continues to rise and the arrests of protesters continue. Fear is growing in the community of Italians in Venezuela, where agents of Nicolás Maduro’s regime are sparing no one, not even our compatriots who have lived in the country for decades, in a so-called ‘knock knock’ operation against his opponents. The last two cases that have caught the attention of Italian authorities concern two Italian-Venezuelans of Sicilian origin.

“But there are many cases – says Fratelli d’Italia Deputy Elected Abroad Andrea Di Giuseppe – the tests are almost everywhere. I ask the embassies to open their doors to everyone and to the dozens of people who call me. I ask them to immediately take refuge in our embassies. Antonio Calvino, 46, of Syracuse origin, did not succeed. It is feared that, in an effort to avoid reprisals, the man could have been hiding in a safe place. “Since last August 9, there is no trace of him, and he was in front of our Consulate in Caracas three years ago.” He was arrested for ‘inciting hatred’. Groups of Italians in Venezuela who wanted to attack our embassy and were released last year under pressure from our own government (an organization that handles the consulate, ed.).

Some refuse to see for themselves what has happened to their home and their family because they themselves fear retribution. So, we filed a complaint with the embassy.

Di Giuseppe, recalling the stories of his comrades calling for help over the terrible situation in Venezuela in recent days after the end of the elections that led to Maduro’s controversial reaffirmation: “There are people who hide every day. In different places, mostly elderly people with limited economic resources, when the authorities stop people on the street and find unpleasant comments in their chats. , they tell me to stay close to them instead of arresting them.

Another case concerns Rita Capritti from Messina, a member of the opposition party ‘Primaro Justicia’, who was taken by local authorities at night between August 1 and 2 and later imprisoned in the Cana d’Azucar prison in Marrakesh. . He was charged with hate speech, terrorism and resisting a public officer. Commissioner Jose Dellacrois, director of the institute, assures that Ms. Capritti is isolated in a room, not in a cell and is in good health. “But the visit of the honorary vice-consul was not allowed, and in the next few days he will try again to get permission to meet her,” explains Forza Italia’s regional deputy, Bernarde Grasso, who expresses “deep concern”. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been following the case from the beginning, and the woman’s brother was already ready to return to Sicily, but was stuck there after his sister’s arrest: “We hope – Tony Capritti – everything will be resolved well for her. We are very tired, and in the next few days I I’m going to see her.”
